THE BOWEN TECHNIQUE

What to expect

Consultation

This it’s the means of the therapist finding out a bit about you and why you have come for treatment and they can then offer you  the most appropriate treatment.

A Bowen treatment can be carried out on a massage bed, a single bed or if needs be in a chair.  Ideally the patient should feel as relaxed and at ease as possible. It is easier for the therapist if you to either reduce to underwear or light loose clothing as the treatment involves working on specific points around  the body.  You will be covered with towels at all times and the room should be warm and comfortable for you. Some quiet relaxing music can be offered if this aids relaxation.

The therapist will carry out a few gently moves and then leave the room for a few minutes if you are happy for her to do so.

A treatment normally lasts between 30 minutes and an hour, depending on what treatment is felt appropriate.  There may be some discussion time at the beginning and end of the session.

Some people respond immediately, some after 2 - 3 sessions and some may need further sessions.  People often choose to return for a maintenance follow up treatment on a regular basis. Ideally treatments should be between 7 and 10 days apart.

It is recommended that you do not have other physical therapies at the same time but Nutritional therapy, Bach Flower remedies and homeopathy can work in harmony.

After care

It is recommended that you try to increase your daily water intake to 1.5 litres a day. If this is more than you usually drink you may wish to increase your intake slowly.

After each treatment you will be advised to not sit still for too long – just a few paces around a room every half hour should help to keep the process working.

The therapist may offer other advice (e.g. stretches, etc) if felt appropriate.
