CHAIR BASED EXERCISEIf you don't use it you lose it! “A significant proportion of disability associated with old age is a result of disuse not disease”. As a result of research in recent years there has been a national increase in the development of falls prevention programmes and exercise programmes for the less able. Chair based exercise has been identified as the most effective and safest way means of strengthening functional muscle groups. Once strength, co-ordination and balance have improved a wide range of home based, outdoor and community activities can be promoted with confidence. There are already chair based exercise groups on offer in most areas but for those who are virtually house bound or dependent on others for their outdoor mobility getting to such a group may be challenging or impossible. For those who have not participated in any exercise for some time an individual programme at home may provide the initial impetus to increase confidence and functional ability and thus make progress to a social group within the community possible. I also offer classes (small groups of up to 10) within local residential units or Care Homes. Individuals : tailor made to suit the client’s needs. If possible a relative should be encouraged to be present to ensure home practice is carried out appropriately. Groups: 1 x 1 hour class per week at each venue (possibly for a limited time e.g. 10 sessions)
